Born Free…To Live Free

“All God’s Creatures are His family; and he is the most beloved of God, who doeth most good to God’s creatures.” – Prophet Mohammed

‘Also the animals possess a soul and that men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren’ – Pope John Paul II (Jan 1990)

“Love is present not only in human beings but in all creatures, birds and beasts. In the worm as well as the human being, the same divine nature is present.” – Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Narrow it is and inhuman too,
For man to think only ‘he’ is born free,
God’s creatures are all,
Great and small,
Of the Land, Air and Sea,
They too are – Born Free,
To live their life free,
Just like you and me,
Let us leave them,

Allow them,
Spare Them,
To live their life free…
Only then are we ‘Human’ – you and me…

…a lot of vehicles,
Swishing past everyday,
On the busy highway,
…some in it are on their way to the beach,
Or a beloved someone,
They are waiting to reach,
…some driving fast,
As their office time has past,
…But have you thought,
About the hens in the carrier vans…?
They are being driven too,
But you can definitely bet,
‘They’ are being driven,
To their Appointment with Death…

…there are some who like to hang around,
Outside the local Mall,
Or the nearest playground,
…shopping, talking,
Or meeting a friend or two,
…catching up on news,
And finding out what’s new,
…but what about the goats,
Tied outside the ‘Meat Shop’,
Still being fed?
They have no inkling,
That though they are being fed…soon,
Soon they will be dead…

…there are some on a first visit to the city,
And so naturally they are busy,
…there are so many a sight to see,
Wherever there is excitement,
…that’s where they want to be,
…Oh! And what of the cattle,
Brought into the city,
Dumped one on top of another…?
Sick, injured, hurt, wounded, trampled,
No one does bother,
…for ‘they’ are on no kind of a ‘tour’,
They are for sure,
On their way to the abattoir…

…there are those who like to stay,
Cooped in their room,
…their favourite lounging position,
They like to assume,
…then to read a book,
Or browse through a magazine,
…or lazily watch the television screen,
So too were the bright, beautiful, colourful birds,
Exercising their ‘Right to be Free’ beyond words,
Until,
Man caught them,
Clipped their wings and caged them,
Against their will…

…then there are those that like to go swimming,
In an enclosed water filled area,
…called a ‘Pool’,
They may float or sunbathe,
…Or simply lie under the shade of the umbrella,
Where perhaps it is cool,
…Unlike the myriad hued fish,
That are ‘born’ to naturally swim deep and free,
…till they catch man’s fancy,
Then from the wide expanse of water,
He will the fish yank,
Devour them or have them swim aimlessly,
In the narrow confines of a fish tank…

Narrow it is and inhuman too,
For man to think only ‘he’ is born free,
God’s creatures are all,
Whether Great Or Small,
Of the Land, Air and Sea,
Winged, Finned, Four legged or Two,
They too are – Born Free,
To Live Their Life Free,
Just like you and me…
Let us start,
To overcome the mind and develop the heart,
Let us leave them,
Allow them,
Spare Them,
To live their life free…
Only then are we ‘Human’ – you and me…
